United Long-Term Landscaping Plan to Begin

After many months of planning, United Mutual’s long-range plan to reduce water use and incorporate drought-tolerant and easy-to-maintain landscaping into the Village will soon be underway. The mutual is starting a landscape modernization project set to begin mid-October to further this goal.

Many residents may not be aware that United Mutual is responsible for the maintenance and irrigation of more than 165 acres of turf. This project will provide for the removal of 20,100 square feet of turf that has been determined to be difficult and expensive to maintain and irrigate. The work is spread over six locations within the mutual, near Gates 1 and 6. Locations for this work were selected by staff and approved by the Landscape Committee in August 2019. Funding for this work was included in the 2020 Business Plan.

The work will consist of removing old turf and irrigation and installing new, low-water-use drip irrigation, planting nine new trees, installing 11 different types of drought-tolerant shrubs, planting low-maintenance groundcover and installing a decomposed granite path and park bench at one location.
