Are Drones Legal in the Village?

Laguna Woods Village has a strict policy against the private use of drones in the airspace over the Village. The only exception is if the drone is being flown by staff or an individual commissioned by staff, and authorization has been granted by the Chief of Security. If you happen upon a drone flying over rooftops in the Village, it is most likely being flown by VMS Maintenance and Construction Department personnel. The drone is being used to evaluate and examine roofs for wear or damage.

“The drone has provided us with a very accurate and efficient way to be sure our Residents’ roofs are in good condition so we can proactively make repairs,” said Maintenance and Construction Director Ernesto Munoz. “We are able to see into areas that previously required a ladder crew. The drone gives us a much better perspective and greatly improves efficiency.”
If you happen to see the drone bobbing overhead, give a wave and know it is there to literally take care of the roof over your head.
