Infection with diverse parasites cause diseases such as malaria, sleeping sickness and elephantiasis. These parasites have plagued humans throughout history and continue to present serious challenges to health in other parts of the world. I will describe some significant examples of human parasites and talk about how these may even be a challenge to health in the US. Finally, we will discuss whether there are compelling arguments for conserving parasite biodiversity.
Naomi attended Smith College before moving to Philadelphia to complete her doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania. After working as a researcher in New York, Seattle, and St. Louis, she was hired by UC Irvine, where she has been a professor for 20 years. Her research concerns developing new, less toxic drugs to treat parasite infections. Naomi lives with her husband who is a fantastic cook, her teenage son Galen who loves history, three demanding cats, and a bossy corgi named Otis. In her spare time, she loves to read, collect fossils, and restore furniture.
