A little History of Badminton.

Ever wonder, why "badminton"? Battledore and Shuttlecock was originally the name of this sport. It was imported from India to England during colonial times.  It involved the Battledore bat (the racket) and the shuttlecock (the bird). In England the game gained popularity when play was established at Badminton House, a large country house that, according to Wikipedia, "...has been the principal seat of the Dukes of Beaufort since the late 17th century". Apparently the players of this fine sport abandoned the name "Battledore and Shuttlecock" in favor of "badminton"...go figure!

Evenings Special note for evening players:  Please bring a feather bird for each night of play.  Usually, someone at the courts has birds for sale (at cost).  Should you purchase feather bird outside of the courts, we suggest you get the quality that usually starts at $22 and up for a tube (Big 5).  The less expensive birds do not fly well and seldom last a game.   New players/beginners do not need to bring a bird for their first night time play.

Guests (evening play) Guests must bring two quality feather birds for each night of play and their Laguna Woods sponsor must be with them at the  courts.  Also note that guests must be 12 years or older to play in the mini-gym.

The Birthday Club Potluck

Activity Director Hue Mullick, and Vice Activity Director Chizuru Yokoyama  have started a birthday club.  It's very simple.  Approx. 3 times a year a potluck is held in honor of those celebrating a birthday.  Usually, they will be held at Aliso Park next to the creek, near the restrooms.  It's the same location where folks played outdoor badminton during the pandemic (You can park in Cul-da-sacs 60 or 12). Everyone brings a dish of food to share.  We'll let you know when the next one is scheduled via the Globe and the website. Also, there will be a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in the mini gym.  Let Hue, Chizuru or Amy know if you would like to join the club by providing your name and your birthday month.  You are welcome to attend the potlucks whether you join the birthday club or not.

See CLUB EVENTS below for details on the next gathering.
